Thank you for choosing Champaign Schools!

Schools of Choice is the process Champaign Schools uses to assign incoming kindergarten through eighth grade students to elementary and middle schools. The initial kindergarten registration period runs each year from January-March with registration for families new to the area throughout the year for all grade levels. If you missed the March kindergarten deadline, are new to Champaign, or have questions about our school assignment process, please contact the Family Information Center at (217) 351-3701 with any questions.

Review - Before You Start

The Champaign Unit 4 Schools of Choice (SCC) plan gives parents of all students the opportunity to apply for admission to a variety of elementary and middle schools. The District recognizes that choosing a school is an important decision, and there are many factors to consider. Please review the Choice info sheets found here and in the documents menu on the right for more information.

Choice:

  • Eliminates the need to continually redraw boundaries due to changes in housing patterns
  • Offers parents and students stability in their school assignment
  • Promotes school improvement in all schools
  • Reduces the need for involuntary busing
  • Promotes diversity in all schools
  • Allows the district to optimize class size at each building

How to participate

Research the school that's best for you and your child. Consider the proximity and the waiting list when researching.

During the registration period, parents need to download the application form and drop it off at Family Information Center.

  • Parents of incoming kindergarten students will need to select five school choices. Parents are encouraged to rank all 12 elementary schools to reduce their chances of becoming unassigned in the event they don't receive one of their top choices. Last year, 85% of families received their first choice and 94.2% received one of their top five choices.
  • Parents of students who wish to request a transfer will follow the same steps during the transfer period.

After you register, you'll need to wait a bit to see how the assignment process plays out. While we'd love to guarantee your applied for school is the one your child will attend, we cannot.

Things to consider

Rank - Things to Consider

Before you register, here are some things you want to keep in mind. If you have any questions about these, or need assistance, feel free to contact us.

All applications received during the application period, regardless of date, will be processed equally.

The likelihood your child will be assigned to your school of choice is dependent on several factors. Those factors include:

Proximity Priority

Students who live close to a certain elementary school have "proximity" priority in the Schools of Choice process. Proximity does not apply to middle school registration.

Click Here to check your proximity.

Sibling Priority

Students who have a sibling attending a school are given a priority if that same school is chosen as a first preference. Priorities are considered within the guidelines of balancing socioeconomic status and seat capacity.

Transportation

Transportation will be provided for students living more than 1.5 miles from their school assignment. In addition, the District provides transportation for students living closer than 1.5 miles if IDOT confirmed hazardous walking conditions exist between home and school.

The Waiting List

Families who do not receive their first choice school will be placed on a waiting list for that school. The waiting list expires annually, so families must reapply during the transfer period.

Proximity

Check your proximity online.

Your “Proximity Priority School” is any school that is within 1.5 miles of your home or, if you do not live within 1.5 miles of any school, it is the school that is closest to your home as determined by the District’s transportation system (Edulog). This system bases mileage on the shortest driving distance from the door of your residence to the door of the school.

If you have a newer address that is not listed in the system please call the Family Information Center at: 351-3701.

Hint: Try entering your address without periods or commas
(Example: 1234 COUNTY RD 100 E)
